Overview
A 6-day budget safari encompassing Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater is a popular and efficient way to experience the highlights of Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. While “budget” typically means more basic accommodations (often camping), it doesn’t mean compromising on the incredible wildlife viewing.
Here’s an overview of what you can expect:
Safari Philosophy (Budget Focus):
- Accommodation: The primary way to keep costs down on such a comprehensive itinerary is by opting for budget camping. This involves staying in public campsites within or near the national parks. Tents are often simple dome tents, and facilities might include shared toilets and showers (sometimes cold water, sometimes bucket showers). Meals are cooked by a safari chef.
- Transport: You’ll typically travel in a 4×4 safari vehicle (often a Toyota Land Cruiser) with a pop-up roof for optimal game viewing. These vehicles are designed for the rugged terrain.
- Group vs. Private: Budget safaris are often joining safaris, meaning you’ll share the vehicle and campsite with other travelers (usually 4-6 people). This helps to split costs. Private budget safaris are also possible but will naturally be more expensive.
- Inclusions: Generally, these safaris include national park fees, conservation fees, vehicle, fuel, driver/guide, cook (for camping), camping equipment (tents, mattresses, chairs, tables), and all meals while on safari.
- Exclusions: International flights, visas, travel insurance, personal items, alcoholic beverages, and tips for the safari crew are typically not included. Tips are a significant additional cost in Tanzania and expected.
